Getting Disability Coverage
Disability coverage is for when you are recovering from an illness or injury and are unable to work. The inability to bring in an income can put a financial strain on a family. It is hard to pay your mortgage, car insurance, and credit card bills without a paycheck. Disability insurance helps by providing an income until you are able to return to work.
Most employers provide disability for their employees. If an employee is unable to work due to an illness or injury, then they can get disability provided for by their job. However, the plan provided by the employer may not be enough. You can consider getting additional disability coverage for full protection.
Disability policies are either long term or short term. Short term polices ensure that you receives a portion of income within the first few weeks of an illness or an accident. The payments usually last between three months to one year. Long-term disability is different, in that it lasts much longer and is generally hard to get. To get long-term disability, you must prove that your injury is an on-going problem that makes it impossible for you to work.
Speak with your employer to make sure disability is available. If you are self-employed, then you should speak with an insurance agent for disability insurance information.
